Viticulture and Enology Services
In
today's competitive viticulture industry, it's imperative that growers
know they're producing top-quality grapes and vintners know when they're
getting them.
With nearly 25 years experience in the agriculture industry, Precision Ag Consulting can help growers and winemakers optimize their harvest and case production.
"It all comes down to quality," Zelinski says. "The production of quality grapes is controlled by three factors. The first is weather and that can't be controlled. The other two are where I come in."
These two factors are:
In Season-- These are the factors that can be effected right now, such as irrigation scheduling, fertilization, pest and disease management, pruning level, harvest timing and the uniformity of the grapes produced.
Long-term-- Those factors that must be controlled over time, such as site selection, row orientation, and variety and rootstock selection.
The Goal
All vineyards have areas of differing wine grape quality, creating challenges for both the grower and the winemaker. Technology now exists to take the guess work out of ensuring quality.
Until
now, one of the biggest challenges for both grower and vintner, has
been identifying the areas of uniform quality and determining optimum
harvest time.
Another challenge for the grower is managing their vineyard in a way that optimizes both uniformity and quality.
Zelinski's goal is to help grower and vintner:
Optimize uniformity and quality
Identify uniformity and quality
Optimize harvest scheduling
Precision Ag Consulting does this by offering the following services.
Services Provided
Irrigation Scheduling
Develop weekly irrigation schedules using soil and plant monitoring and water budgeting with information collected from on-site visits and CIMIS weather data.
Soil Moisture Monitoring
Precision Ag Consulting is the only authorized distributor of Decagon Soil Moisture Monitoring Equipment on the Central Coast. After researching several different types of systems, Zelinski has concluded that the Decagon Ech20 monitoring system is the most effective one out there for wine grape growers. Water Quality Appraisal
Sample water quality, to evaluate the suitability of irrigation water for wine grape production. Water quality analysis includes tests for:
Salinity
Permeability
Toxicity
Nitrate-Nitrogen Levels
Fertilizer Recommendations
Determine fertilizer requirements through the use of plant tissue sampling for nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, boron and other minor nutrients.
Soil Suitability Investigation
Develop soil surveys for texture, drainage, rooting depth, uniformity, salinity levels, and pH. These tests help manage different areas individually and this leads to greater uniformity.
